Gil (Steve Martin) is distressed when his youngest son Kevin (Jasen Fisher), due to his extreme introversion, is advised by school teachers to return home. In an effort to help Kevin regain his confidence, Gil plays games with him every day, but there seems to be little effect. Gil's brother-in-law Nathan (Rick Moranis) has an entirely opposite educational philosophy; he hopes to raise his daughter to be a useful talent, but under his oppressive, force-fed education, not only does his daughter lose her happy life, but his wife ultimately leaves him as well. Buckman (Mary Steenburgen) is a single mother raising her two children alone. Life is already tough for her as she faces the rebellious phases of both kids—her daughter marries young, and her son becomes increasingly withdrawn.
