The film is adapted from Canadian writer Jane Rule's novel "Desert of the Heart," set in the 1950s when divorce was not permitted in many places in the United States. One of the protagonists is Vivian, a 35-year-old English professor who comes to Reno, Nevada, where the laws are relatively lenient, to prepare for her divorce. During her stay on a farm, the serious Vivian meets Kay, the younger stepdaughter of the farm owner Frances, who is ten years her junior and works at a casino; Kay is a lively woman who is open about her sexuality. Although Vivian realizes she is attracted to Kay, she has concerns about starting a relationship, unsure if she is ready to be with a woman. Meanwhile, Kay, who is dependent on her stepmother Frances, realizes that Vivian is the destined person she has been waiting for. Released in 1985 with a budget of only $350,000, "The Liquid of Love" became the first widely released lesbian feature film, captivating countless audiences with its beauty, humor, and candid expression of female desire, and making many aware that love between two women is possible and does not always end in tragedy. This acclaimed and successful pioneer paved the way for more lesbian works in the future.
