The story takes place in a distant future where outer space is no longer a profound mystery for humanity. They have constructed space stations and begun investigations of extraterrestrial planets. Psychologist Kevin (George Clooney) receives a distress signal from his friend Gibarian (Ulrich Tukur), a scientist who is currently leading a team at a space station named "Prometheus." Kevin feels uneasy as he has lost contact with Gibarian and the Prometheus space station has also lost communication with Earth. In an attempt to protect his friend, Kevin decides to investigate further. Upon arriving at the station, he is shocked to discover that Gibarian has committed suicide, and a series of strange experiences lead Kevin to believe that everything is connected to a planet called Solaris.
