66-year-old Mr. Schmidt (played by Jack Nicholson) is retired and living at home, and his aimless life has left him quite bored. He still wakes up at 7am every day, but all he has for company are tedious crossword puzzles and his annoying wife. Schmidt needs to find something to change his life, so he decides to sponsor a Tanzanian orphan named Ndugu, and he writes him his first letter. The sudden passing of his wife makes his life feel even lonelier, and he finds himself missing that boring woman. However, at that moment, he discovers love letters between his wife and another man in her changing room. Schmidt decides to take a road trip alone, visiting many places he used to live, reminiscing about the past. After impulsively kissing a married woman, he slowly forgives his wife. His daughter’s marriage turns out to be worse than he imagined, and her mediocre husband and incredible family make him increasingly worried about her future, yet all of this is beyond his control. Throughout his journey, he never stops writing letters to Ndugu, describing his life and confusions in detail. When Schmidt returns home after attending his daughter's wedding, he unexpectedly receives a reply from Ndugu. Looking at those simple words and Ndugu's childlike drawings, Schmidt suddenly bursts into tears…
