Nick (played by Mel Gibson) is a junior manager at an advertising company in Chicago and is a typical male chauvinist. He has many complaints about his new female boss, Darcy (played by Helen Hunt). Darcy asks Nick to come up with creative advertisements for women's products, which frustrates her greatly. In a twist of fate, Nick accidentally gets electrocuted in his own bathroom, which grants him a magical ability—mind-reading. With this unexpected gift, Nick can now easily know the thoughts of the women around him. He gradually becomes obsessed and is surprised to discover that Darcy has always had feelings for him. Therefore, Nick decides to use this to his advantage and playfully tease her by getting closer and trying to win her affection, all while being unaware that he is falling in love himself. Since discovering the inner world of women, this macho man finally begins to appreciate their beauty, embarking on a romantic journey with his incompatible female boss.
