The film is a prequel to the 2008 film "Death Race." In a post-industrial era, various large private city prisons are built, among which the most notorious is "Death Island" prison. Carl (played by Luke Goss), known as the "Cop Killer," is sent here to serve a life sentence. During the reign of warden Jones (played by Lauren Cohan), who is determined to make a name for herself in the television industry, the government hands over the operation of the prison to Blue Company. In Blue's view, cellblocks can be profitable under the new commercial operating system. The prisoners are seen as perfect contestants for a deadly sports competition, with their fights being broadcasted to a likely enthusiastic audience. The carefully designed competition by Blue Company is called "Death Race." Carl becomes a racer, fighting for freedom against numerous prison guards, unaware that he is embarking on a legendary path.
