The film is based on true events. Mike (Sam Worthington) is an unlikable detective who, at the behest of his ex-wife Pam (Jessica Chastain), teams up with his friend Brian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) to investigate a bizarre murder case. The crime scene is located in a remote oil field in Texas, which, due to its seclusion and desolation, has become an ideal dumping ground for the killers, hence it is called the "Texas Killing Fields." To date, nearly 60 bodies of young women have been discovered here. Through meticulous reasoning and investigation, Mike and Brian zero in on a little thug, and it is evident that a girl named Anne (Chloe Moretz) is the thug's next target. Tracking Anne's whereabouts, the detectives arrive at the Texas Killing Fields, where they realize the truth of the events awaits them.
