Yang Naifan (played by Ruan Lingyu) is a wealthy young lady born with a silver spoon, yet she falls in love with the poor ordinary university student Li Zuyi. This mismatched relationship is doomed from the start, and under family pressure, Yang Naifan leaves Li Zuyi to marry a man named Huang Daren, with whom she has two children. One day, by chance, Yang Naifan and Li Zuyi reunite. This unexpected encounter reignites the flames of love that had not completely extinguished in their hearts, quickly spiraling out of control. Yang Naifan abandons her family and decides to elope with Li Zuyi. Their elopement leads them to live a poetic life in the countryside; however, their funds soon run out, and Li Zuyi has to return to the city to find a job to support his family. Nevertheless, this proves to be very difficult, and ultimately, Li Zuyi passes away in deep sorrow.
