This documentary is based on footage shot by wildlife conservationist Timothy Treadwell between 1999 and 2003 in Katmai National Park and Preserve, Alaska, USA. Treadwell had dedicated himself to the research and protection of wild grizzly bears since 1989 and co-founded the "Bear Man Association" with friends, camping alone in Katmai every summer to observe and record the bears' behavior. He also volunteered to educate thousands of schoolchildren, calling for society to combat poaching and to pay attention to and protect grizzly bears. Director Werner Herzog visited Treadwell's parents and ex-girlfriend, conducting detailed interviews about the circumstances of Treadwell and his girlfriend Amie Huguenard’s deaths in October 2003, attempting to answer what led Treadwell to choose to retreat from humanity into the wilderness and dedicate his life to the grizzly bears while showcasing his extraordinary experiences. The film was nominated for the Documentary Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and the Alfred P. Sloan Prize and won several Best Documentary awards from various associations such as the Independent Spirit Awards, Los Angeles Film Critics Association, New York Film Critics Circle, and the National Society of Film Critics in 2005.
