Adam (John Cusack) lives in Los Angeles and has just been dumped by his girlfriend. His single nephew Jacob (Clark Duke) is obsessed with video games and refuses to leave the basement of Adam's house. Adam's old friend Nick (Craig Robinson) is a "whipped" husband struggling with his job, while another friend, Lou (Rob Corddry), is a heavy drinker who attempted suicide and ended up in the hospital. To help Lou, Adam and Nick decide to invite him to revisit Kodiak Valley ski resort, and Jacob tags along. The four stay in the same hotel room from years ago, drinking and singing in the hot tub on the terrace. The next day, they wake up from a hangover only to find themselves inexplicably transported back to the 1980s. Worried about disappearing due to altering history, Jacob pushes the three to recall their past actions and stick to the script; however, these three old friends, who suddenly find a second chance at life, all have ulterior motives. Will the broken hot tub time machine be fixed? Will the future become chaotic due to changes in history?
