Zhang Cuishan (played by Wu Zhenyu) sets out with his wife and son Zhang Wuji (played by Jet Li) to celebrate his master's 100th birthday. On the way, they are ambushed, and Zhang Wuji is struck by the Cold Ice Palm. At Wudang Mountain, Zhang Cuishan and his wife are forced to death by various sects, and Zhang Wuji can no longer practice martial arts, relying solely on the genuine energy supplied daily by Zhang Sanfeng to survive. Zhang Sanfeng's actions attract the jealousy of Song Qingshu (played by Zou Zhaolong), who joins forces with Emei disciple Zhou Zhiruo (played by Li Zi) to deal with Zhang Wuji. The Holy Maiden of the Ming Sect, Xiao Zhao (played by Qiu Shuzhen), helps Zhang Wuji change his fate, allowing him to meet a master on a cliff who cures the cold ice poison in his body and teaches him the nine-tenths of "Nine Yang Divine Skill." He also practices "Qian Kun Da Nuo Yi Heart Method" in the forbidden area of the Ming Sect. Upon learning that Mongolian Princess Zhao Min (played by Zhang Min) has plotted to have the six major sects of the martial world attack Guangming Summit in an attempt to annihilate the Ming Sect, Zhang Wuji is determined to go through fire and water to save the Ming Sect.
