In May 1945, the novice Eighth Route Army soldier Dong Cunrui (Zhang Liang) and his friend from the same village, Zhi Zhenbiao (Yang Qitian), asked to enlist and fight against the Japanese like other young people. However, due to their young age, they were rejected by Captain Zhao (Zhang Ying). Both were particularly dissatisfied, especially Dong Cunrui, but there was nothing they could do. During an anti-"clean-up" operation, the district party secretary Wang Ping unfortunately sacrificed his life. Just before he died, he entrusted Dong Cunrui to submit his last party fee. When Dong Cunrui and Zhi Zhenbiao fulfilled Wang Ping's wish, they also became members of the Eighth Route Army. Through the baptism of gunfire during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the civil war, Dong Cunrui gradually transformed from a reckless, impulsive child into a true revolutionary soldier. In May 1948, during the battle to liberate Longhua, Dong Cunrui, who had become a Communist Party member, was appointed as the demolition team leader. At a critical moment in executing a task, Dong Cunrui made a shocking act to save his comrades and became a hero.
