The story takes place in Victorian England, where the idyllic feudal patriarchal society is facing a devastating blow from capitalism, teetering on the brink of collapse. The beautiful young woman Bathsheba (played by Carey Mulligan) inherits her aunt's farm and becomes the owner, while the hardworking young man Gabriel Oak (played by Matthias Schoenaerts) falls in love with Bathsheba and comes to work on her farm. However, Bathsheba does not regard the honest Gabriel with any interest; she is madly infatuated with a playboy named Troy (played by Tom Sturridge). Even though Troy had cruelly abandoned the pure maiden Fanny (played by Juno Temple), Bathsheba blindly believes that this man can bring her the perfect love she has always dreamed of.
