One day in 2004, the wandering samurai Saeki Kentaro (played by Haruma Miura) learns at his grandmother's funeral that he has no blood relation to his grandfather Kenichiro (played by Issey Takahashi). His actual grandfather, Miyabe Hisakazu (played by Junichi Okada), had already died during a kamikaze mission at the end of World War II. Shortly thereafter, Kentaro is called by his sister Keiko (played by Kazue Fukiishi) to investigate Miyabe's actions. They visit Miyabe's wartime comrades, only to find that many of them label him as "the greatest coward of the Imperial Navy," stating that he refused to engage in battle even while witnessing the deaths of his comrades. The veterans' assessments hit the siblings hard, but as the investigation deepens, they discover that Miyabe possessed extraordinary flying skills and was deeply devoted to his wife (played by Mao Inoue) and daughter, vowing to return to his family at any cost. Firmly believing in this, Miyabe gives up the dignity of an Imperial soldier, and his approach to life unknowingly influences his comrades. As the veterans recount their tales, Kentaro watches as his grandfather reaches his final moment... This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Naoki Hyakuta.
