Rob (John Cusack) is a music fanatic who runs a record store, where his two employees, Dick and Barry, are also music lovers. One day, Rob's girlfriend, Laura (Iben Hjejle), breaks up with him, and he can't even figure out why. To cope, he creates his own "breakup list," reflecting on his past failed relationships. He realizes he always plays the part of the dumped, so he decides to reach out to his ex-girlfriends to ask them why they ended things. Meanwhile, Laura stays in touch with him because she needs to move out of Rob's place. One day, Rob learns from Laura's friend that she has started dating Ian (Tim Robbins), who lives upstairs.
