Huw (played by Roddy McDowall) is born into a mining family, where his father, Old Morgan (played by Donald Crisp), and his brothers work every day in the dark, hot underground doing the hardest and most dangerous jobs. Despite this, Huw's childhood is filled with happy memories, as his father's optimistic attitude inspires the whole family, and everyone cherishes the beautiful moments spent together. The closing of the steel mill plunges the Morgans into crisis, with a large number of steelworkers flooding into the coal mining industry, causing wages for coal miners to plummet. Discontented miners decide to go on strike, including Old Morgan's sons. Old Morgan strongly opposes this radical action, leading to intense conflict with his sons, who choose to leave home. Fortunately, the strike yields positive results, and the Morgan family returns to a normal way of life.
