Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart) and his partner Archer run a detective agency in San Francisco. One day, a wealthy woman (Mary Astor) pays them a visit and hires them to find her missing sister. They immediately begin their investigation and discover that the woman's sister is with a mysterious man named Thurs. What they initially thought was a simple missing person case takes an unexpected turn. Archer is killed during the investigation, and the legendary Thurs is also murdered, leading the police to suspect that Sam was involved with Archer's wife and killed his partner. Despite being in deep trouble, Sam continues to investigate the case, uncovering that the wealthy woman had previously dealt in antiques with gangsters, including Gutman, who later asks Sam for help in finding a statue—the priceless "Maltese Falcon." Sam begins to study the mysterious statue and ultimately discovers that the truth is hidden within it. This film received nominations for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Screenplay at the 14th Academy Awards.
