Caroline is a young factory worker who finds herself abandoned and pregnant while struggling to escape poverty in post-World War I Copenhagen. In her struggles, she meets Dagmar, a charismatic woman who runs a hidden adoption agency in a candy store, helping poor mothers find foster homes for their unwanted children. To escape poverty, Caroline takes on the role of a wet nurse.
