In the year 794 AD, during the reign of Emperor Kanmu in Japan, the region of Nagaoka in Kyoto was cursed by the vengeful spirit of his brother, Prince Aritsune, leading to continuous natural and man-made disasters. Emperor Kanmu was forced to relocate the capital to Heian-kyo, thus beginning the 400-year-long Heian period. At that time, intense power struggles among the aristocracy and the suffering of the people resulted in the emergence of numerous vengeful spirits, causing humans, ghosts, and monsters to coexist in a tense environment. The onmyoji, affiliated with the Imperial Court's Onmyodo Bureau, emerged as vital mediators between heaven, earth, humanity, and the spiritual realm, with the most prominent being the enigmatic Abe no Seimei (played by Mansai Nomura). Deputy Commander Minamoto no Hiitaka (played by Hidemasa Ihara) is entrusted with visiting Abe no Seimei, where he is deeply impressed by the strange phenomena he witnesses and Seimei's personal charm; Seimei, in turn, is attracted to Hiitaka's honorable character. The story begins with their fated encounter, leading to a precious friendship.
Strange occurrences have recently been frequent in the Imperial Court. The daughter of Left Minister Fujiwara no Nagasue gives birth to Prince Atsuhira, but the baby is born under a curse. Seimei calls upon the honeybugs (played by Eriko Imai) and a mysterious woman, Aoon (played by Kyoko Koizumi), to help break the curse alongside Hiitaka, only to be falsely accused. It turns out that the mastermind behind everything is Onmyoji Head Tōdō Sōzu (played by Hiroyuki Sanada). He exploits the conflicts between the ministers and the rivalries among the consorts to incite chaos, and aims to summon the strongest vengeful spirit from 150 years ago, Prince Aritsune, to completely overturn Heian-kyo...
The film is adapted from the "Onmyoji" series of novels by Baku Yumemakura.
