The oppressive air of the small town weighs heavily on the educated Charlie (Teresa Wright), who longs for excitement and the sudden appearance of her beloved and admired Uncle Charlie (Joseph Cotten) to inject new life into her existence. When Charlie decides to wire her uncle an invitation, she is surprised to first receive a telegram from him stating that he will come, deepening her affection for him. Uncle Charlie's arrival excites Charlie and her parents, but her book-loving sister remains indifferent. Soon, Charlie, feeling rejuvenated, transforms into a carefree young woman. Two strangers claiming to be reporters from a newspaper show interest in interviewing Charlie’s family as a typical American household, which infuriates Uncle Charlie and leaves Charlie and her mother perplexed. During a conversation with one of them, Herbie Hawkins (Hume Cronyn), Charlie is shocked to learn a horrifying secret about her uncle.
