A very hardworking single mother (Carice van Houten) and her son, Jake (Emjay Anthony), live a life dependent on each other. However, the terrifying transformation that Jake undergoes makes their already difficult life even harder. The clergy are powerless against what seems to be Jake being possessed by an evil spirit, and in desperation, they decide to call upon the renowned scientist Dr. Seth (Aaron Eckhart). Dr. Seth lost his beloved in a car accident and also his mobility, having to live the rest of his life in a wheelchair, which brings him immense pain and despair. Always a skeptic of the supernatural, Seth chooses to explore the hidden secrets within Jake using scientific methods. Through various scientific techniques, Seth delves into Jake's subconscious.
