With a dream of becoming an artist, Tod (William Atherton) arrives in Hollywood, where he becomes a set painter and explains the situation of Homer (Donald Sutherland), who works as an accountant in a motel. The fragile friendship between these two men quickly fractures with the arrival of a woman named Faye (Karen Black). Faye yearns to become a movie star, but the stark reality forces her into the life of a call girl. Faye's decline fills Tod with anger, and seemingly to oppose him, she chooses the weak Homer and begins living with him. Although she lives with Homer, Faye never stops seeking pleasure outside.
