Harry Caul (played by Gene Hackman) runs a detective agency in San Francisco, and his latest job is to eavesdrop on a conversation between a man and a woman. He meticulously sets up multiple listening devices near a plaza to capture every word they say. The eavesdropping goes smoothly, and the sound is clear, but he does not understand the meaning of what they are saying. He takes the audio files to his company to claim his payment, only to be told that the boss is not available. He decides not to hand over the audio files for the time being and refuses the payment. He carefully keeps the audio files, even feeling anxious during parties, fearing they might be stolen. Despite all precautions, the audio files go missing. In a state of panic, Harry follows the information he overheard and visits the hotel mentioned by the couple, unwittingly getting caught up in a huge conspiracy...
