Leona (played by Barbara Stanwyck) is a wealthy heiress born with a silver spoon in her mouth. Due to her extremely delicate nerves, she spends her days bedridden, with her only connection to the outside world being a telephone. One day, when her husband Henry (played by Burt Lancaster) is late returning home, Leona decides to call his office to find him. However, the phone gets crossed, and Leona overhears two strangers plotting to kill an innocent woman. Startled and scared, Leona decides to save the woman's life, so she picks up her only weapon—the telephone. Yet, when Leona tries to inform the police about what she has heard, no one believes her. To make matters worse, it seems the two killers are aware of Leona's existence.
