John (Billy Chapin) and Pearl (Sally Jane Bruce) are a pair of unfortunate siblings whose father, Ben (Peter Graves), was sentenced to hang for robbery. Before his arrest, Ben hid the stolen money in Pearl's doll and made them promise to never reveal this secret. Ben's prison mate, Harry (Robert Mitchum), is a corrupt preacher who accidentally discovers the whereabouts of the stolen money. After being released from prison, Harry finds Ben's wife, Willa (Shelley Winters), and he cunningly wins her heart, becoming the stepfather of John and Pearl. Thus, Harry's sinister scheme begins. Harry kills Willa, whom he sees as worthless, and disposes of her body in the river, then he threatens and coerces the siblings to extract the secret of the stolen money. When all his efforts yield no results, a furious Harry reveals his true nature. John and Pearl escape from Harry by rowing away and end up in a strange town where a kind woman, Mrs. Rachel (Lillian Gish), who specializes in adopting abandoned children, takes them in. However, their peaceful life is short-lived as Harry's evil footsteps reach this pure land.
