Richard is a pilot who, after retiring, works in a bar where he meets and falls in love with his colleague Barbara (played by Anna Massey). After a violent argument with his boss, Richard is fired and, left without a dime, has to turn to his ex-wife Brenda (played by Barbara Leigh-Hunt). Brenda runs a marriage agency and kindly welcomes Richard, secretly slipping some money into his pocket. Unexpectedly, a few days later, Brenda is assaulted and strangled with a tie by their mutual friend Bob (played by Barry Foster), who turns out to be London’s infamous "neck tie killer." Richard becomes the prime suspect in Brenda's murder. To further implicate Richard, Bob seizes the opportunity to kill Barbara, making Richard the most wanted man in the city, leading to his eventual capture. The detective in charge, Oxford (played by Alec McCowen), finds the situation suspicious and, with a clue from his wife, discovers that the real criminal has revealed himself.
