The story takes place in June 1964, when a vehicle carrying three civil rights activists is hijacked by the Ku Klux Klan, after which the group disappears without a trace. Rupert (played by Gene Hackman) and Alan (played by Willem Dafoe) are two FBI agents assigned to investigate this heinous incident. However, when they arrive in the small town to begin their investigation, they find themselves facing numerous difficulties; no one is willing to believe them, and no one can provide any valuable clues. Pierce (played by Brad Dourif) is the deputy mayor of the town and a staunch member of the Ku Klux Klan. His brutish and evil nature often leads him to violently abuse his weak and gentle wife (played by Frances McDormand). Rupert sympathizes with Pierce's wife's plight, and over time, she develops feelings for Rupert, which offers Rupert and Alan a breakthrough in the case.
