Best-selling horror novelist Sutter Cane (Jürgen Prochnow) mysteriously disappears. A portion of his manuscript, which is about to go to print, also vanishes without a trace. Cane's immersive descriptions and bold predictions have already made the book a sensation before its release. Many fans become obsessed with his works, leading to irrational and violent behavior. To avoid delaying the publication, the publisher hires private detective John Trent (Sam Neill) and female editor Linda Stiles (Julie Carmen) to investigate Cane's whereabouts. Initially, John does not believe in the book's power, but when he and Linda reach the small town described by Cane, both are shocked.
