Young Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) works in Phoenix and is trusted by her boss, Mr. Lowery (Vaughn Taylor). Her boyfriend, Sam Loomis (John Gavin), runs a hardware store in Fairvale but is unable to remarry because he has to pay off his late father's debts and alimony to his ex-wife, so he can only sneak away to meet Marion occasionally during business trips. Feeling dissatisfied, Marion seizes the opportunity to flee with $40,000 in stolen money on a Friday afternoon. However, her escape is not smooth: she is spotted by Lowery while leaving the city and is suspected by the police early Saturday morning. After spending $700 to trade in her old car for a new one, Marion continues to drive anxiously. As night falls, heavy rain obscures her vision, making it impossible to drive, so Marion is compelled to stay at the Bates Motel run by the friendly Norman (Anthony Perkins). He attempts to invite Marion for dinner at his home, but is abruptly stopped by his fierce mother, so he brings dinner to the motel's living room instead. While dining and conversing with Norman, Marion ultimately decides to return to Phoenix on Sunday. After dinner, she goes back to her room to take a shower. At this moment, an old woman's figure suddenly appears in the bathroom...
