Formerly an elite member of the social department at "Mainichi News," Keisuke Tashiro (played by Shosuke Tanihara) had a scandalous report exposing misconduct within the county police blow back on him, ultimately being relegated to the marginalized regional intelligence department. He goes through each day without motivation, casually responding to various gossip inquiries from his junior, Kaori Kisaki (played by Rei Okamoto). One day, Tashiro and Kisaki are ordered by their superiors to travel to his hometown, Narumi Village, to gather insights on the local fireflies. Meanwhile, Professor Yamakawa from Higashi-O University (played by Kenji Watanabe) recently went missing in the area, sparking widespread speculation and sensation. Subsequently, "Weekly Mainichi" journalist Hisano (played by Takanori Ukawa), along with Tashiro's old acquaintance Eiko Kawashima (played by Noriko Aoyama), arrives in Narumi Village to investigate leads. Initially disinterested, Tashiro begins to uncover various strange occurrences during the trip, and he, along with Kisaki, Hisano, and Kawashima, inevitably becomes embroiled in a mysterious incident... This film is adapted from Seichō Matsumoto's novel of the same name.
