Composer and music college professor John Russell (played by George C. Scott) spends a holiday with his wife and daughter, but a sudden car accident takes their lives. Lonely and mourning, John leaves New York and takes a teaching position at a university in Seattle. He finds an old house that has been vacant for 12 years; although rundown, the quiet environment suits his musical composition. However, after moving in, he discovers that strange noises can be heard around 6 AM, and soon realizes in terror that the house is haunted by the spirit of a child. Following the ghost's hints, John begins to consciously explore the secrets hidden behind the house…
