Don (Ray Milland) doesn't know if he can call himself a failed writer, because how can a writer whose work has never been accepted by the public be a writer at all? To vent his frustrations, Don turns to alcohol for comfort, unaware that alcohol will only worsen his situation. The appearance of Helen (Jane Wyman) pulls Don out of the pit of alcoholism; her tenderness and understanding warm Don's lonely life and give him a sense of belonging, prompting him to decide to get back on his feet. However, the good times don't last long, as Helen's father is very dissatisfied with Don's relationship with his daughter, seeing him merely as a good-for-nothing drifter. The denial of their relationship sends Don back into a crisis of alcoholism, even leading him to contemplate suicide. In the face of her disheartened lover, can Helen save Don once again from the brink of death?
