Arnie Cunningham (played by Keith Gordon) is a very inconspicuous student at his high school. He is silent, awkward, and introverted. His parents pay little attention to him, and he only has his girlfriend Leigh (played by Alexandra Paul) and his best friend Dennis (played by John Stockwell) around, with no other friends. One day, Arnie sets his sights on a 1958 used Plymouth Fury, and he instantly falls in love with the car, buying it without hesitation.
