Arthur (Al Pacino) is a shrewd and capable lawyer living and working in the bustling city of Baltimore. Unlike most of his self-serving colleagues who would abandon their principles for money, Arthur firmly adheres to his sense of justice, always voicing for the underdog and never compromising his conscience. Arthur's untainted integrity causes his peers to keep their distance, viewing him as an outcast, but Arthur does not mind. One day, in court, Arthur offends Judge Henry (John Forsythe), and they become adversaries. Little did Arthur know that when he next encounters Henry, the latter has fallen from grace, imprisoned for rape and assault. Henry asks Arthur to defend him, knowing that refusal could have devastating consequences for Arthur's future career.
