The rogue Tamiya Iemon (played by Shigeru Chiba) embezzles a huge sum of public funds, which is discovered by his father-in-law, Yotsuya Zamen (played by Shinjiro Asano). Displeased with Iemon's despicable character, Zamen orders his daughter, Aiwa (played by Katsuko Wakasugi), to divorce him. The relationship between father-in-law and son-in-law deteriorates, leading to a violent confrontation, and Iemon ultimately cruelly murders Zamen. Afterward, he conspires with his friend, Naosuke (played by Shuntaro Eimi), to falsely claim that Zamen was killed by an enemy, leading Aiwa, her sister Asode (played by Noriko Kitazawa), and Asode’s fiancé, Mokuji (played by Ryuuzaburou Nakamura), to escape to Edo. Along the way, they plan to push Mokuji off a cliff. Eventually, Iemon, who has settled down temporarily, becomes increasingly dissatisfied with his impoverished life and the burden of his wife. By chance, he saves the wealthy merchant's granddaughter, Ume (played by Atsuko Ikewaki), from thugs. The merchant admires Iemon's bravery and wishes to take him as a grandson-in-law. Learning this news, Naosuke conspires again with Iemon to murder the obstructive Aiwa...
