Édian (Benoît Magimel) has an unglamorous rise to power, which can even be described as very ugly. Although he became the new president of a multinational corporation and enjoyed great success for a time, his past actions remain highly disreputable. He attained the title of son-in-law by marrying the president's daughter (Julie Gayet) and was involved in numerous dirty business dealings during that time. These transgressions left Édian feeling deeply conflicted upon taking office. Perhaps it was his conscience awakening that led him to constantly repent for his past sins. Persuaded by his friend Patrick (Francois-Xavier Demaison), Édian decides to find Michèle (Dominique Labourier), who he had previously wronged, leaving her without security in her old age, hoping to provide her with financial compensation to alleviate his guilt. However, Michèle rejects Édian, leading to a confrontation between them. In a moment of desperation, the reckless Patrick accidentally kills Michèle. This plunges Édian deeper into turmoil...
