The environmental scholar Gengaku Nishiyama conducts an investigation into pollution without yielding to the pressures from corporations and the police that support them, while also studying the "Centuries" passed down through his family for generations. One day, his daughter Mariko's boyfriend Nakagawa returns from abroad. In front of Mariko and Nakagawa, Nishiyama delivers a cruel piece of advice: "In this day and age, we do not know what the future holds. Even if you marry, do not have children." A few days later, a massive outbreak of slugs mutated due to the synthetic preservative AF2 occurs on Dream Island. Meanwhile, the number of deformed children increases across Japan, while in the vicinity of zinc mines, children with abnormal abilities emerge. On the night when Nakagawa's fishing village is devastated by red tide, Nakagawa and Mariko are drawn to each other and eventually unite on a boat.
Nishiyama argues that humanity's excessive development will lead to its own extinction and calls for an end to unnecessary production. However, people's interests are focused on improving their lives and increasing production, resulting in him being criticized for the "collapse of humanism." An international conference sees a clash between developed countries, which argue that population growth in developing nations exacerbates environmental destruction, and developing countries, which counter that the resource wastage of developed nations is the cause of environmental damage. Amidst this, abnormal weather occurs, including the freezing of the sea surface in the Pacific and snowfall in Egypt. Furthermore, news arrives that radiation trapped in the stratosphere has rained down on New Guinea, prompting the dispatch of an international joint investigation team. Two of Nishiyama's subordinates are also sent from his research institute. However, the joint investigation team goes missing, leading to a second joint investigation team organized by Nishiyama and Nakagawa. What they witness are plants and animals mutated by radiation, indigenous people who have become cannibals and attack them, and the bodies of the first investigation team members turned into corpses deep within a cave. Nishiyama tries to stop a foreign team member pointing a gun at them, but when he is countered with "What else can we do?" he has no choice but to shoot one of his own subordinates.
At that time, super ultraviolet rays fall on the Japanese archipelago due to the destruction of the ozone layer caused by an SST accident, leading to a series of wildfires and explosions at chemical plants. Additionally, abnormal weather expands globally, causing agricultural areas in various countries to be wiped out. The soaring food prices and disasters lead to social unrest, with riots for food and the decay of youth becoming rampant. Finally, a secondary disaster arises from this chaos, distorting the sky over Tokyo into a massive mirror. Amidst the frequent large-scale disasters, Nishiyama's wife, Nobue, falls ill and dies in his arms. Meanwhile, a new life is conceived within Mariko.
Faced with repeated natural disasters, Nishiyama warns the National Diet about various patterns of human extinction and emphasizes the crisis facing the Earth, laying out a bleak outlook for destruction. The Prime Minister, shocked by the horrific content, is forced to make significant political decisions. The decision is...
