On July 2 of a future year, monitoring stations across the United States detect a massive spaceship, hundreds of miles in diameter, approaching Earth. The radio signals emitted by the spaceship interfere with the Earth's communication satellites and release several smaller ships, each 15 miles in diameter, that fly over major cities on Earth. With the alien spacecraft's intentions unclear, panic and confusion ensue. David (played by Jeff Goldblum), a computer engineer, deciphers the radio signals from the aliens, realizing they are actually a countdown to an attack. He manages to notify his ex-wife, Connie, the president's assistant, but it's too late. On July 3, the alien ships begin their assault on Earth, resulting in a devastating blow to human civilization. The president (played by Bill Pullman) and others evacuate to a military base to command a counterattack with the air force, but their efforts are futile, and the military base is destroyed. Only pilot Steven (played by Will Smith) manages to crash one of the alien fighting ships. Survivors escape to a secret military base, where scientists have been studying an alien ship that crashed over 50 years ago, working to find a way to combat the aliens—this base is humanity's last hope...
