This film is adapted from the bestselling novel of the same name by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi. Single mother Grace (played by Mary-Louise Parker) moves into the Spiderwick estate with her twin sons Jared and Simon (played by Freddie Highmore) and her daughter Mallory (played by Sarah Bolger), and encounters a series of strange events. In the course of his solitary investigation, Jared discovers a fairy exploration guide written by his great-great-uncle Arthur Spiderwick (played by David Strathairn) in the attic. Despite a warning on the book's cover, Jared reads the guide and subsequently sees one of the fairies described in the book, the Brownie Thimbletack (voiced by Martin Short). Thimbletack warns Jared not to take the book outside the protective circle of the Spiderwick estate, lest the evil spirit Mulgarath (played by Nick Nolte) claim the guide and harm other fairies. However, Mulgarath's minions learn of the guide's rediscovery and mistakenly capture Simon. To protect the guide and their family, the three siblings must engage in a life-and-death battle against Mulgarath...
