Truffaut's first color film and the one in his works most rich in social and political awareness. In a future world, books are entirely banned; reading is a crime, and all books must be surrendered for burning. The firefighters' task is not to extinguish fires and save lives, but to burn books and capture readers. Consequently, some book lovers memorize books, hoping they can be passed down in the future; these people are known as "book people." The male protagonist is initially a loyal firefighter, and burning books is his duty. One day, he meets a girl who influences him, gradually changing his worldview and discovering that books contain a spiritual world. Through this warm and intimate mental life, he can no longer tolerate the cold and heartless mechanical society. Ultimately, his act of betraying by secretly reading is reported by his wife, and he and his lover attempt to escape to another beautiful world that aligns with their ideals, where books exist, and humanity can truly live. Adapted from the science fiction novel by American author Ray Bradbury. (Film Biweekly)
