Astronomy graduate student Kate (Jennifer Lawrence) and her mentor Dr. Randall (Leonardo DiCaprio) make a shocking discovery during their research: a comet the size of the Himalayas is speeding towards Earth, set to arrive in six months and destroy everything. They approach President Orlean (Meryl Streep) in the hopes she will take their findings seriously, but they are met with ridicule and disdain. Subsequently, the duo turns to the media for help, opting to bypass the government and reveal the secret to the public, with less than satisfactory results. Furthermore, Kate is arrested by the FBI for leaking national security information. When President Orlean is caught in a scandal, she finally remembers the two unfortunate scientists and decides to give them another chance to announce the impending destruction of Earth through a government statement.
