Beatrice (played by Ginger Rogers) is a washed-up Broadway star. By chance, she meets a writer named Clown (played by William Holden). The young and brash Clown criticizes Beatrice to her face, unexpectedly capturing her attention and sparking her interest in him. Beatrice's ex-husband Harry (played by Paul Douglas) is a well-known Hollywood producer. He randomly reads Clown's script and praises it highly. Beatrice and Harry approach Clown, persuading him to change the age of the originally 19-year-old female lead to 29 so that Beatrice can play the role, and ultimately, Clown concedes. Sally (played by Pat Crowley) is a budding actress who believes she is the perfect choice for the female lead after reading Clown's script.
