Sixteen-year-old Patty (Christina Ricci) is in her rebellious age, and her proud personality leads her to disregard everyone around her, with the only being she cares for being her pet cat named "DC." Every night, the free-spirited DC sneaks out of the house, and by chance, it stumbles upon a kidnapping scene. The victim sees DC as the last hope and leaves behind a note with a rescue message attached to DC. Soon, Patty discovers the mysterious distress signal and reports it to the local police department, but she is dismissed as a prank. In frustration, Patty heads to Boston to find an FBI detective, and to pacify her, the police assign the bumbling detective Reggie (Doug E. Doug) to the case. A man, a woman, and a cat embark on their thrilling investigation.
