Akeem (Eddie Murphy) is the prince of Zamunda. He and his servant Semmi (Arsenio Hall) come to America for a 40-day undercover trip. For Akeem, this trip has another purpose; he is very unhappy with the marriage his father Jaffe (James Earl Jones) has arranged for him. Therefore, Akeem decides that he must find his true love in America. Fortunately, such a woman soon appears, and her name is Lisa (Shari Headley). To get closer to Lisa, Akeem takes a job at the bakery owned by Lisa's father. Lisa has a violently aggressive boyfriend, but she prefers the refined Akeem. Just when their relationship is starting to blossom, Jaffe unexpectedly arrives in America, and Akeem's carefully concealed identity is at risk of being revealed.
