Moses (Ryan O'Neal) is not an honest businessman, and even though he works in the Bible sales trade, this doesn't stop him from using some unsavory methods. A car accident claims the life of Moses's lover, and the small daughter left behind, Eddie (Tatum O'Neal), becomes Moses's burden. After getting $200 from the perpetrator, Moses decides to send Eddie to her aunt's house. On the road, Eddie showcases her genius in eloquence and salesmanship, allowing Moses to make a substantial profit, and a genuine bond forms between the faux father and daughter. However, the proud duo inadvertently falls into a trap. After a series of twists and turns, the two reach their destination safely, but watching Eddie about to leave evokes a feeling of "reluctance" within Moses.
