On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of American independence, a presidential candidate meticulously prepares for their campaign, while social elites, opportunistic country singers, fervent fans, and detached BBC reporters all play their parts. During a grand gala, the assassination of a female star brings the film to its climax. "You may say I'm not free, but I do not worry about it" — as the indifferent song echoes at the end, the camera swiftly sweeps over the noisy crowd below, revealing the hollow souls behind the vacant or twisted faces, corrupted by mass culture and having lost their sense of independence. Robert Altman, adept at handling ensemble casts, precisely depicts the humanity of American life under the shadow of the Vietnam War with his outstanding directing and control, as well as deeply revealing the spiritual crisis of American society amidst the universal atmosphere of joy. The film received Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Director, and is regarded as a representative work of American cinema in the 1970s.
