Jackie (Susan Sarandon) is the ex-wife of Luke (Ed Harris). She bore him a pair of children and diligently managed the household, but their marriage ultimately failed due to personality differences. For the past three years since their divorce, the children have been cared for alternately by Jackie and Luke, living a relatively peaceful life, until the photographer Isabel (Julia Roberts) falls in love with Luke, causing tensions to escalate. Isabel moves into Luke's house, determined to be a good stepmother. Even though she has little experience in household management, she manages to bond with the children and earn their acceptance. Unfortunately, the children feel that no one can replace their birth mother Jackie in their hearts. Jackie's feelings are even more complicated. She is suffering from cancer and certainly hopes for a good stepmother to take care of her kids. However, her jealousy prevents her from wanting to see Isabel bond with the children as if they were her own. As her condition worsens day by day, Jackie, struggling emotionally, finally makes a decision that brings her peace.
