Harrington (Charles Coburn) and his daughter Jean (Barbara Stanwyck) make a living through con artistry, cleverly teaming up to earn a fortune. One day, aboard a cruise ship, they encounter a young man named Charles (Henry Fonda), who has just returned from the Amazon rainforest, having inherited a substantial fortune. After some interaction, Jean discovers that Charles is a pure-hearted and kind person, making him the perfect target for their con. However, as time goes by, Charles's unique charm begins to captivate Jean, leading her to fall deeply in love with him. Just then, Charles learns of Jean’s true identity and intentions, and in his anger, he decides to completely leave her.
