Student Anderson (played by Christopher Reeve) possesses a remarkable talent for screenwriting, which makes the now washed-up Sidney (played by Michael Caine) envious and jealous. Anderson reminds him of the successful times he once had. Under Sidney's guidance, Anderson completes a script titled "Death Trap" and prepares for a rehearsal at Sidney's home. Sidney sees a business opportunity in the script and understands that such a perfect screenplay is bound to become a hot commodity in the industry. Sidney and his wife Myra (played by Dyan Cannon) decide to plan to kill Anderson and claim the script for themselves. Fortunately, their plot does not escape the notice of the sensitive neighbor Heg (Irene Worth) and the shrewd lawyer Porter (Henry Jones). As Anderson steps closer and closer to the trap of death, the two decide to lend him a helping hand.
