C. C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon) is a junior employee at a large company in New York City. His bachelor apartment is often used by the company's executives for their romantic rendezvous, and as a result, Baxter earns several promotion opportunities. Baxter has a crush on the company's elevator operator, Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine), and one day he finally musters the courage to ask her out to see a play that night. However, Baxter waits all night and does not see Fran; it turns out Fran is the mistress of the company's married executive, Jeffery Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray). That night, they are having an affair in Baxter's apartment. Jeffery promises Fran that he will divorce his wife and be with her openly. Fran believes him, but a few weeks later, she learns from Jeffery's former mistress that what he said was just a lie. On another night, when Baxter returns home, he accidentally finds Fran collapsed on his bed, having taken a large number of sleeping pills in an attempt to commit suicide... The film received ten Oscar nominations in 1960, winning five awards including Best Director and Best Picture.
